Ottawa's Inclusive Swim Club

About Us

The Ottawa Rideau Speedeaus d'Ottawa is a swim club with a difference: it is primarily a gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, queer and two-spirited swim club, but welcomes everyone including members from the straight community. Our main purpose is to help members reach their swimming goals, be they for competition, fitness or recreation. Previous competitive swimming experience is not a prerequisite and members participate in competitions only if they choose to do so. Our swim lanes are organized by level of ability, offering a place for everyone, from the beginner to the seasoned competitor.

We value swimming in an inclusive, diverse, fun, open, trustful, safe and supportive environment.

We are committed to creating a welcoming, non-discriminatory environment, and encourage the participation of women, people of colour, linguistic minorities, and people with disabilities.

We ask that, as a minimum, new swimmers be comfortable in deep water and have some knowledge of swimming. Special Learn-to-Swim programs are held from time to time for budding swimmers not yet ready to attend regular practices.

Enjoy your time with the Speedeaus. We're always looking for new people.

Danny started coaching young age-group swimmers in Regina in 1991 and became an NCCP level 2 certified coach in 1995.  He moved to Ottawa to work at Statistics Canada in 1997, and he was the head coach of the Carlingwood YMCA masters from 1997-2004.

Danny was focused on his own masters competitive swimming until 2006 setting numerous provincial and national records.  In 2010, Danny began coaching the Rideau Speedeaus.  He still swims for fitness during the cold half of the year, but gives it up for his of love tennis and volleyball in the other half.

Joanne started competitive swimming in 2005 in Owen Sound and is currently a member of the University of Ottawa GeeGees Varsity Swim Team. She was involved in volunteer coaching the younger groups in Owen Sound and sharing her enthusiasm for swimming. Hard work, inspiring coaches, and supportive teammates, have led Joanne to qualify and compete at provincial and national levels. "[Swimming with the GeeGees] has been a wonderful experience expanding my understanding of the sport with new coaches and teammates." She began coaching for Rideau Speedeaus in March 2017 and looks forward to continue sharing her experiences and knowledge with the club!

Zach has been swimming competitively since 2003 and he just completed 4 years of varsity swimming both at McGill university and uOttawa. He specializes in mid-distance breaststroke and medley and competed at the Olympic trial level. For the past 7 years, Zach has been coaching back home in Montreal but has recently coached at the masters level for 2 years at McGill. His favourite part of coaching is coming up with creative practices, seeing his swimmers improve and getting to know everyone on a personal level. He hopes to continue coaching after he completes his master’s degree in sports management and enters the workforce!

Derek started swimming only three years ago with the masters club at Carleton. It was love at first dive for him. He quickly worked his way from the slowest lane to the fastest in the club. After two years, Derek joined (and is currently a member of) the Carleton University Ravens swim team. He is 100% a sprinter, focusing on butterfly, freestyle, and a little bit of backstroke. Breaststroke is his weakest, but he has been working hard to improve it to get into the IM races. Derek is always excited to learn more about swimming, and equally as excited to pass on the knowledge that he takes in to help others improve.
